J.F. Kennedy shuts down rival Colonia
9:18 PM, Apr. 14, 2012  Written by Greg Tufaro, Staff Writer
WOODBRIDGE — After extending its winning streak to five with Saturday’s 6-0 blanking of crosstown rival Colonia, the J.F. Kennedy High School baseball team has already won more division games than it did last season.
“I think last year we had an inexperienced team,” said coach Eric Mills, whose Mustangs finished 3-11 in the Greater Middlesex Conference White Division.
“Last year I think we found ways to lose. Now we find ways to win. We are a scrappy team with a lot of heart.”
The Mustangs (6-3 overall, 5-1 division) trail division-leader North Brunswick (6-1 overall, 5-0 division) by a half game.
Junior right-hander Adonis Hernandez, who earned a save in Friday’s win over Colonia, struck out nine and scattered four hits while going the distance in Saturday’s victory. He has surrendered just one earned run over 19 innings.  Hernandez, who threw an economical 90 pitches, retired nine of the last 10 batters, issuing one of two walks on the day in the seventh.
Were it not for dropping its season opener to West Morris on a walk-off hit and losing on an eighth-inning error to J.P. Stevens, J.F. Kennedy’s record could have just one blemish.
“We lost two heartbreakers,” Mills said. “I think that’s given us a little character.”
Colonia (1-6 overall, 0-6 division), however, which has lost five games by a total of nine runs, knows heartbreaking defeat even better.
The difference between the Patriots and J.F. Kennedy right now is the latter’s ability to execute and come through with timely hits.
J.F. Kennedy rallied from three deficits during Friday’s 12-10 comeback win in the initial meeting between the schools.
Despite stranding 10 runners Saturday, the Mustangs came through in the clutch, including Eric Giordano’s two-run double in the home sixth, which produced the final margin.
Colonia, conversely, got the leadoff batter aboard in each of the first two innings, but failed sacrifice bunt attempts – both resulted in pop outs – changed the game’s complexion.
Three of the Patriots hits went for extra bases – including a fifth-inning leadoff double by Chris Diprofio, who was thrown out trying to ill-advisedly stretch his hit into a triple with Colonia trailing by four runs.
“Execution is part of the game,” Colonia coach Tom Hennessy said. “It doesn’t matter how hard you hit the ball or where you hit the ball. We play good baseball, but there’s always those mistakes that cost us. We take ourselves out of games.”
J.F. Kennedy built a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Tom Farley’s RBI single and Hernandez’s bases-loaded walk. Hernandez’s free pass came on a full count and ended his second consecutive 10-pitch at bat.  The Mustangs would have another 10-pitch at bat later in the game, illustrating the club’s trademark peskiness at the plate.
J.F. Kennedy tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Zach Buchholz led off with a double and scored on Joe Stone’s single. Giordano later scored on the back end of a delayed double steal.
Sophomore right-hander Bryan Kopko, making his first start for Colonia, went the distance, throwing 126 pitches, 61 of which came in the final two innings.
He worked in-and-out of trouble as J.F. Kennedy stranded seven runners in scoring position, twice leaving the bases loaded.
Seven Mustangs had at least one hit. Giordano, Stone and Leo DaCosta had two hits apiece.
